Well, Mom & I are on our way back home to Naperville after a very quiet & rejuvenating weekend visiting Opah & Nana in Door County. Just what we both needed in the midst of a very hectic September.
We drove up Friday night in record time, partly because the late departure time (7pm) which avoided rush hour traffic, but mostly because the new extension of 4 lane divided highway 57 from Green Bay all the way up to Dyckesville (within 12 miles of Sturgeon Bay). The ‘old’ route up Route 42 and along the lakeshore on County S was more scenic but only in the daylight, so 57 is our new route of choice. Things change.
We managed to continue our 25th anniversary celebrations this weekend, as Opah & Nana choauferred us around, and treeated us to some of the best restaurants on the peninsula. They also gave us a very nice folk art replica of our house in Naperville, made in the shape of a glass ball, and a big silver bowl (silver anniversary).Very cool.
The weather was cool (50’s) but very sunny & crisp. Lake Michigan is at an almost record low level (several feet below average). So the beaches are very wide, and firm and smooth. Perfect for a couple of brisk beach walks and Dad even went for a run to the rocky point north of Shivering Sands creek.
Sunday morning we went to Opah & Nana’s church with them in Jacksonport. It’s a very old but quaint Methodist church with a small propane stove in the corner for heat. The minister travels back & forth between Sturgeon Bay and Jacksonport each Sunday. The congregation was very small but friendly, and everyone seems to know each other. We think Mom was the youngest person there.
Now we’re homeward bound, and should be there before evening. (I’m typing in the right seat while Mom drives). Next week promises to be busy at work and at home for both of us again, as I will be traveling to Faifax Va. on Thurday. Then we fly to California on Friday for 4 days of wine tasting in Napa Valley with the Duffy’s, Summers, and Ledewskis. I’m sure that will be a new adventure which will merit its own blog entry, so stay tuned! (Don’t worry, we wont become wine snobs….we can’t afford it!)
I was going to add a couple of very nice pics of sunset and beachwalks, but our internet provider is just too darned slow trhese days. (Did i mention we're switching from Comcast to DSL?). Sorry maybe we can post them later.
Love,
Dad
